What Prayer Does For You

Prayer: Your Conversations With God
The Act of Praying

Praying helps build your connection with God. Prayer helps you focus on His Word and His desire for you. Prayer is good for your body and soul.

Prayer is therapeutic. When you seriously pray to the Lord about your concerns, your needs, your desires, your troubles, good things happen inside of you. Your heart opens up. You build up hope. You release tension, and anxiety lessens. This is all good for your heart health and for alleviating stress.

We all have our troubles, our phobias, our nightmares. Sometimes they come at us at overwhelming speeds, plaguing us daily and making us dread the oncoming day. We cannot solve all of the troubles of the world. We can't even solve all the troubles around our immediate area.

When troubles barrel towards us, when desperation takes us over, when anxiety threatens our health, we need to stop and give our problems to the Lord. One missionary pastor said it best, I believe. "Do what you can and give the rest to God." If you've already done what's humanly possible to alleviate your situation, you might as well give it to God, because you cannot do anything else.

This doesn't mean to quit looking for opportunities where you can do something. It means turn to the Lord for all your needs. He will provide. Whether it's giving you strength to get through the rough times, making troubles go away, or opening doors for you, God is there.

If stress, fear, exhaustion, exasperation, whatever has held you back from doing something about your situation, something within your control, take this to the Lord in prayer. Prayer for the strength to face the problem and solve it as well as you can, and then pray for Him to help you solve it the rest of the way - beyond the point of what you're currently capable of.

Like money. We all need money to live in this world, and many of us do not have enough. What happens? We get over on our bills and find we can't make our payments. So we avoid our creditors, often turning off our phones. That doesn't solve anything. It will lead to more actions from your creditors, giving you more anxiety and stress - and bringing you further away from the Lord.

Pray.

Pray for the strength to answer the phone the next time it rings. Pray for the strength to calmly and rationally discuss your situation and your options in solving it. Pray for the calmness and strength to handle the situation if the answers are not easily found. Pray if it should go as badly as you fear it could.

And then answer that phone.

You may be surprised. Your creditor may let you know of some assistance that you qualify for. The creditor may be friendly and helpful, instead of rude and demeaning. After your phone call, God may bring an opportunity to you that helps you solve the situation. Who knows what will happen.

But we do know what will happen if you don't go to God and allow Him to work for you.

I've been in similar situations. Every time I tried to handle it alone, things went wrong and I paid for it later. But when I went to God, He would open my eyes on how to clear this up and to avoid it in the future. He brought this about in the way of knowledge and opportunities. But in order to see these and take advantage of them, I had to open my heart and mind to Him.

Prayer is you giving God the opportunity to do something wonderful in your life.
